Week 3 - Critique 1: Ideation 1

Digital Preservation

Ideation

Digital preservation can be referring as a series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as necessary. The main goal of digital preservation is the accurate rendering of authenticated content over time, be it personal or public. People often think that digital preservation is just as easy as “Ctrl+S”, and their digital content will be preserved as long as they want. Digital preservation actually involved planning, resource allocation and application of preservation methods so that the digital information remains accessible and usable. Due to new digital content can be created easily and keep it up-to-date, it actually gives challenges to preserve those digital content. The installation aims to let the user to experiment on digital preservation in a metaphor approach. There will be an object which represent the digital content, where each action by the user, such as, refresh, update, delete, copy, paste, move to, save as and etc. All these actions will trigger the changes on the “digital content”. There will also be actions which affect the “digital content” which are not trigger/control by the user as well. The target outcome is to let the user actually question themselves critically on digital preservation. Question such as, how sustainable is their digital content? Is the digital content considered fragile? What is the necessity to preserve the old version of a digital content? How secure it is to preserve digital content online? User will be able to have a different view on digital preservation after experimenting with the installation.

Week 2 - Digital Preservation

Digital Preservation means actions that is necessary to ensure continued access of digital materials for as long as necessary. We could create new digital content easily and keep everything up-to-date, at the same time it creates more challenge in preserving all these contents.

- Is preserving the society's heritage easier? Or preserving the digital memories easier?
- Is digital memories that fragile?
- Can we really preserve digital memories for as long as possible?
- How long can we preserve the digital memories?
- Every "refresh" will bring us the latest update, and at the same time, are those old updates being preserved well?
- As people nowadays always ask for the latest update, is it necessary to preserve the digital memories?

Week 2 - Preservation: 1st Few Ideas Come To Mind

Below are the first few ideas which came to my mind regarding the topic "Preservation" :

- Preservation from Aging
getting old, focused more on the appearance, plastic surgery.

- Preservation from Aging
more on body functionality, such as the eyesight, the brain memories, the ability to listen and etc. or even preserve from being dead.

- Preservation versus Impermanence
why do people want to preserve something? the reason/motive to preserve

- Preservation of Traditional Culture
how do the people preserve their traditional culture generation by generation? is the traditional culture still preserve as it is used to be? or did it change/tweak during the pass down?

- Preservation of Digital Information
is preserving digital information as easy as people think? by just simply "ctrl+s"? is the preserving of digital information strong/weak? digital content change every seconds, how people preserve the digital information?
