Week 3 - Critique 1: Ideation 1

Digital Preservation

Ideation

Digital preservation can be referring as a series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as necessary. The main goal of digital preservation is the accurate rendering of authenticated content over time, be it personal or public. People often think that digital preservation is just as easy as “Ctrl+S”, and their digital content will be preserved as long as they want. Digital preservation actually involved planning, resource allocation and application of preservation methods so that the digital information remains accessible and usable. Due to new digital content can be created easily and keep it up-to-date, it actually gives challenges to preserve those digital content. The installation aims to let the user to experiment on digital preservation in a metaphor approach. There will be an object which represent the digital content, where each action by the user, such as, refresh, update, delete, copy, paste, move to, save as and etc. All these actions will trigger the changes on the “digital content”. There will also be actions which affect the “digital content” which are not trigger/control by the user as well. The target outcome is to let the user actually question themselves critically on digital preservation. Question such as, how sustainable is their digital content? Is the digital content considered fragile? What is the necessity to preserve the old version of a digital content? How secure it is to preserve digital content online? User will be able to have a different view on digital preservation after experimenting with the installation.
